Following on from a recent blog post on RADIO CREATORS, we’re taking a deeper dive into the importance of community and small-scale commercial radio being not just in the community but being at its centre.
Bro Radio, based in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, is doing great things to ensure that it’s an (pro)active participant in the area it serves. On the RADIO CREATORS podcast, Steve Randall spoke with Nathan Spackman, the station’s operations director who shared the station’s journey, challenges, and successes.
Bro Radio is celebrating 15 years on air and in that time it has grown from covering just the town of Barry to expanding its reach across the Vale of Glamorgan and even into Cardiff via DAB.
Nathan highlighted the station’s old-school ILR style, which combines a familiar playlist with a strong emphasis on local content and events.
One of the standout aspects of Bro Radio is its unwavering commitment to community.
Nathan explained how the station has embedded local content into every hour of programming, ensuring that listeners always hear about local events, music, and initiatives.
A significant part of Bro Radio’s community engagement is the Bro Radio Academy which aims to inspire and train young people aged 11 to 18 in radio and media.
Nathan shared heartwarming stories of young participants who, initially disinterested, found their passion for radio through the academy. The academy offers these young talents a platform to develop their skills, gain qualifications, and even consider a career in media. It’s a brilliant example of how community radio can make a tangible difference in the lives of young people.
The station also runs the Bro Radio Community Awards, a celebration of local heroes, businesses, and organisations.
These awards not only recognise the incredible work being done in the community but also strengthen the station’s ties with local residents and businesses. The awards have become a highly anticipated event, showcasing the best of the Vale of Glamorgan and highlighting the positive impact of community radio.
Sustainability is a crucial issue for many community radio stations, and Bro Radio is no exception.
Nathan discussed the importance of diversifying income streams to ensure the station’s long-term viability. While grants have been a significant source of funding, the station has also focused on local advertising and partnerships.
By building strong relationships with local businesses and offering valuable advertising opportunities, Bro Radio has created a steady revenue stream that supports its operations and initiatives.
As we wrapped up our conversation, it was clear that Bro Radio is more than just a radio station. It’s a vital part of the community, providing a platform for local voices, supporting young talent, and celebrating the achievements of its residents.
Nathan’s insights offer valuable lessons for other community stations looking to make a similar impact.
